I guess because I make viral ads, some folks wanted to know what I think of this Rick Perry ad.
I think it's blown up in his face.
As far as I can tell, this was a poll-driven concept and ad, but the poll was flawed. Perhaps they asked Iowans what they felt about gay marriage and gays serving in the military, and figured, wow, Iowans are against this stuff. Let's make an ad!
But I think that poll is severely wrong in concept. I don't think there's any way I would have made this script or tried to flesh out this concept. Not for all the money in the world. While Iowans don't like "that stuff," they don't think it's the most important. Why?
Because this upcoming election year, those who prefer America-as-a-beacon-of-freedom (AAABOF) face an existential fight against those who want America-as-socialist-utopia (AASU - pronounced "ass out of you and me").
There is only a small segment of the folks in the AAABOF camp who think social issues are "all that and a horse." Mostly, they are composed of Ralph Reed and Gary Bauer and the Concerned Blue Hairs of America.
The rest of the folks recognize that the major enemy is socialism, and it must be stopped. Restricting gay marriage, getting gays out of the military, and making the world safe for heterosexuals to wear powder-blue tuxedos can wait another day. In fact, even bringing it up is just annoying and obnoxious.
Churchill worked with Stalin to defeat Hitler. Are you telling me Republicans can't leave the whole goofy gay thing alone until American socialism is defeated? Geez!
It's just not terribly bright. But that's the Ralph Reed portion of the AAABOF.
I'm not gay, but I generally used to support GOProud, because I don't think the State should even be handing out marriage licenses to heterosexual people, much less homosexual. A lot of that stuff was started back in the 1920's when the progressives wanted to prevent the "wrong kind" of people from procreating.
Keep out of relationships, Mr. and Mrs. Statist. You're only needed if there is a dispute over a contract. And dammit no, I don't want to hear about "the chillren" blah blah and the State having to protect the family (don't see that in the Constitution, Mr. and Mrs. Statist). Anyway, worry about that argument later.
Churchill. Stalin. Remember?
Even so, I think the attacks on Twitter by GOProud's (the conservative gay organization) Jimmy LaSalvia against Perry's campaign people was a tad harsh. Given this, I guess I can understand why Breitbart resigned from its board of directors, but here's hoping they work things out.
Meanwhile, let's all just concentrate on defeating socialism, and quit getting distracted by teh stoopid.
