Mark Slater, one of the great composers of our time.
A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to do a phone interview with a genius called Mark Slater. Unfortunately due to circumstances beyond my control, I was unable to air the interview on its scheduled date of February 8th, 2010.
I present it to you now.
Note that I do not use the word "genius" lightly. Geniuses are rare in any field, especially in film composing. If you are lucky enough to spot one, and gifted enough to recognize that genius, do everything in your power to protect it.
You are a sick monster if you do not.
Mark has been kind enough to work with me twice. The first time was on my film Flatland. He created all sorts of original music, and even arranged an epic bit of Wagner for the film. All with little money and much stress from me.
I assure you, if I'd had a larger budget, I would've given him the full orchestra that he's accustomed to and deserves. Like when he recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra at Abbey Roads. If I ever one day get a chance to remaster Flatland, I will put him back into Abbey with every musician the Wagner piece requires, including that fellow with the cowbell.
I admit much dissatisfaction, for not being able to give him that opportunity the first time around.
The second time I worked with Mark was on my film Hive Mind. He made some wonderful bits in the film for me, despite his being on the move, jetsetting between the U.K. and Los Angeles. Despite his being busy winning multiple awards for his work, he managed to take time out to grace my film with his abilities.
By the way, Mark and I have never met in person.
